Boundary Waters/Quetico Trip for 2001
June 8th-17th, 2001
Day 2:Saturday, June 9th, 2001Fishing Blackstone
Blackstone is a decent sized, small lake, with enough area to keep 2 fishing parties busy for at least 2 or 3 days if the fish cooperate, and you can find them. GeoFisher and GadgetMan took the far western end of the lake, while Paul and Alan took the other end of the lake and the forks.
On the western end of the lake, we managed to find really good numbers of smallies beginning to turn on. These fish were feeding up, and had not been on the nest. We did see many nests, but they were either old nests, or had been abandoned due to poor weather the previous week. In either case, the fishing was pretty good, but all the smallies were rather small. We were used to catching 2 3lb smallies most of the time. We caught numerous 1-2lb smallies, and some huge northern, but only broke the 3lb mark 1 time. All fish were caught in the back of the coves in really shallow water. I still don't believe these fish were on the nest though..rather, they were feeding up, preparing to return to the nests that had been abandoned the week or so before.
Total smallies for the day for GeoFisher and GadgetMan..77.
Paul and Alan were having difficulty locating fish. They did manage to find some fish, but the main lake was totally void of anything. Northern would not bite, and smallies were nonexistent. In the far back cove, in the northern fork, they did manage to catch some 50 smallies,
but nothing to write home about.
One final note about this day.I find a picture of my youngest daughter in my camera bag. I whimper, then sniffle a little, then flat out cry for about 20-30 minutes. I try not to think about family and home, but cannot put it out of my mind am on a major emotional roller coaster for a good hour or so. I decide to remove the adhesive backing, and stick the picture to the front of our canoe. The canoe has been named the U.S.S Natalie for my youngest daughter.
